Loughborough Junction x Sem Cafe

In the early summertime of 2013, I stood waiting a very long time for the reluctant arrival of the P4 (bus) on the way back from a trip to Brixton Village. I looked up the road at Sem Cafe and thought that the facade desired an extreme Gourmandizing makeover. Integral to the concept was convincing the landowner, Sem of Sem Cafe, that the project was in his interest. I am not sure all that I said, but it ended with a handshake and the request for a palm tree to be painted within the mural. Next, I began a series of communications with the artist Mem Morison, who performed an artwork titled Leftovers inside Sem Cafe years previous. As a performance artist, Mem’s work is steeped in personal histories and site-specific environments to foster constructive dialogue, acknowledging the complexities of cultural differences. He got on board with the idea and shared with us a treasure, a family heirloom, his mother’s famous Baklava recipe.
